When meeting a person for the very first time, our minds quickly scan the person to see what kind of person they are and whether or not we would like to have any form of relationship with them. Some of the things that help us in making this discrimination is by looking at their dress, their hair, their gestures, the things they have, and even listening to their voice and the manner in which they speak.

The dress and hair and even the things we might have are not true reflections of who we are. But the manner in which we speak says so much about us because our words are an indication of our thoughts and what is in our hearts. It takes a few minutes to dress well and be presentable, but it takes quite some time to learn to speak well especially when our feelings are high. Sometimes we fear to speak in public spaces because we don’t see ourselves having the right skills or qualifications especially when addressing an audience of professionals. Personal speaking coaches and trainers  might help here and there. But the One who can turn us into phenomenal speakers is Christ.

Peter, before denying Jesus, was identified as one of his disciples because of the way he spoke; he sounded like Jesus, hence, to debunk these claims he began to curse and swear to sound unchristlike (Math 26:74).

When the disciples went around preaching the word of God, the Sadducees were amazed at how learned they sounded even though they were fishermen. This is because they spent most of their time with Him who is All-knowing and Wise.

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus” Acts 4:13.

The more time we spend with Jesus, praying, studying the word and consuming any content which brings us closer to Him, our minds and hearts change and our speech gets more refined as we become more like Him.

“God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” Isaiah 50:4
